Overview
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Health Care Technician (HCT) functions as a support to the licensed nursing staff and performs activities related to the personal care, hygiene needs, and activities of daily living of an assigned patient group. Responsibilities
Assists with the maintenance of unit supplies to ensure the smooth function of the unit, including stocking nurse servers, cleaning instruments and equipment, ordering supplies, and making up charts. Collects data on assigned patients as directed by Registered Nurse (RN) and ensures accurate documentation. Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills as outlined in the skills checklist including: measurement of vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, and measuring and recording intake and output. Performs or assists patients with the activities of daily living. Prepares patients for transportation and/or transport. Completes the unit specific HCT Safety Checklist at the beginning of each shift Receives delegated responsibilities from RN each shift and maintains close communication during shift regarding completion of tasks/responsibilities Completes and documents basic patient care independently: including but not limited to baths, vital signs, accuchecks and meal trays Maintains patient safety as the highest priority level: ensuring safety measure compliance such as fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions and patient ambulation safety Assist the team in facilitating a high volume of patient admission and discharges in relation to medical-surgical patient populations. Acts as preceptor and supports the development of other staff and healthcare students. Provides leadership for initiatives designed to improve the quality of care or clinical outcomes. Assists Nursing Supervisor/coordinator in the development of departmental standing orders. Manages triage responsibilities of high risk and low risk pregnant women, well women, and acute conditions following obstetrical and gynecological protocols. Assists with moderately complex procedures. Administers chemotherapeutic agents and blood products. Educate patients regarding planned surgical procedures. Resource for CMA and LPN staff. Provides comprehensive prenatal and breastfeeding education. Excels in customer service, team building and problem solving abilities Perform in-office injections and blood pressure monitoring.

Overview
The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for patients undergoing endoscopy procedures including prep, intra procedure and recovery phases for routine GI procedures of colonoscopy and upper endoscopy with opportunity to train for advanced and pulmonary teams. The RN will provide direct patient care, rotating through the phases, and deliver moderate sedation under direction of physician. Works collaboratively with other departments and unit staff to provide care to inpatient and outpatient populations and delegates to unlicensed personal as appropriate.

Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service. Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs. Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation. Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base. Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solution. Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. Prepares patient for procedure. Completes assessment, reviews health history, starts IV and provides education to patient. Monitors and sedates patients during their procedure. Cares for patients in both phase 1 and phase 2 recovery. Assists the CRNA during cases requiring anesthesia involvement. The overall role of the professional RN in Digestive Health is to define, direct, supervise and evaluate patient care directly and via delegation to others by using the nursing process.
