Manufacturing Technical Specialist

Location: Rockford, IL

Hire Type: Contract (12 months with strong potential for conversion)

Pay Range: $27–$40/hour (based on experience)

Sterling Engineering is partnering with a leading aerospace manufacturer in the Rockford area to hire a Manufacturing Technical Specialist. This role supports production operations in a high-quality, precision manufacturing environment and is ideal for someone with strong troubleshooting skills, mechanical aptitude, and hands-on manufacturing experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Support daily production operations by executing and maintaining manufacturing processes
• Troubleshoot production and quality issues and assist with implementing corrective actions
• Review and interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, and specifications
• Work closely with production teams to resolve operational challenges and improve efficiency
• Assist with continuous improvement initiatives and updates to standardized work procedures
• Support Lean manufacturing practices and process improvement efforts
• Ensure compliance with safety procedures and quality standards

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, production support, or a technical operations role
• Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, precision assembly, or production testing
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints (GD&T preferred)
• Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, or production-related issues
• Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles or continuous improvement initiatives
• Experience working in a regulated environment (ISO 9001 or similar) is a plus

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a variety of engineering assignments in developing and implementing production/processing methods and controls to meet quality standards in the most cost-efficient manner.

Troubleshoot manufacturing issues resolving tooling and production process problems while optimizing efficiency and eliminating downtime.

Evaluates process flow and plant layout recommending and implementing improvements and/or modifications in sequence of operations and equipment utilization in order to improve thru-put, reduce labor/manufacturing costs and improve safety.

Develops costs for test production data; prepares technical analysis, recommends production methods and processes required to meet design objectives.

Reviews proposals of outside vendors regarding the purchase of new or modernized production/processing equipment and monitors equipment upgrades and improvements.

Continuously monitors operations to ensure compliance with approved methods and quality standards.

Coordinates and develops manufacturing schedules for projects.

Develops the PFMEA’s control plans and schedules.

Performs line validation and trial run management.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

Strong technical and analytical ability.

Project management and organizational skills preferred.

Manufacturing experience in lean and cell manufacturing, process improvement, and equipment development, equipment buy offs, direct equipment installations, daily support, and debug.

Experience working with customers and sales preferred.

Ability to work with and communicate at all levels of manufacturing environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a manufacturing environment as a mechanical or manufacturing engineer role

Preferred

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in tool and die design.

Job Summary

The primary function of the Application Engineer ("AE") is to provide accurate pricing information for the design and production of our industrial gears, gear drives or gear repair services. Upon receiving a project request, the AE will review and analyze all customer supplied data, including technical and design specifications necessary to complete the project. The AE will accurately determine the raw materials, engineering, manufacturing, logistic, and other costs necessary to complete the project to specifications and provide the customer with an accurate quote on price.

Primary Responsibilities

• Review the project request with the customer and/or salesperson.
• Review all customer supplied drawings, specifications, data, etc.
• For repairs, evaluate gearbox to determine necessary repairs and scope of work.
• Determine preliminary designs and specifications.
• Develop cost estimates based on the data supplied by the customer to include all preliminary design work, materials, production costs, etc.
• Review customer purchase orders to ensure they reflect the quote in accurate, up to date and meets the customers’ expectations.
• Submit quote to customer in conjunction with the H&S sales team.
• Assist with overall workload within Applications Engineering to meet customer needs and department schedules.

Qualification and Experience

• B.S. Mechanical Engineering or B.S.M.E.T. or equivalent work experience.
• Knowledge/experience with metal machining and manufacturing processes.
• Experience in the mechanical drive/power transmission industry preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Computer literate with MS Office applications; design experience with Solid Works a plus.
• Superior time management skills; capable of handling multiple priorities.
• Strong problem-solving skills.

SCOPE OF ROLE

The Robotic Welding Programmer is responsible for creating and maintaining robotic welding programs. Their duties include program creation/support/improvement, part selection and development, design improvement recommendations, and robotic/automation operations training. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, competency and/or ability required to fulfill these duties. Other duties as assigned.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Robotic Welding Programmer I Focus: Execution under guidance, Support, and learning

· Creates and edits basic robotic & automation programs using established standards.

· Reads and interprets drawings and work instructions to support program creation.

· Assists with tooling and fixture setup and basic testing.

· Makes minor mechanical or program adjustments under guidance.

· Verifies engineering information and flags discrepancies to manager.

· Notifies manager of quality concerns, delays, or equipment issues.

· Collaborates with team members to support daily production needs.

· Follows all safety guidelines and standard operating procedures.

· Remains flexible and shifts tasks based on manufacturing needs.

· Works within assigned deadlines to support production timelines.

· Participates in continuous improvement discussions.

Robotic Welding Programmer II

Focus: Ownership of processes and independent problem-solving

· Independently creates, maintains, and improves robotic & automation programs.

· Analyzes drawings, work instructions, and engineering data to optimize programs.

· Designs, tests, and implements tooling and fixtures to support production and quality.

· Makes mechanical and program adjustments to meet quantity and quality requirements.

· Collaborates with maintenance to ensure proper and timely equipment upkeep.

· Identifies process issues and implements corrective actions.

· Suggests design improvements or alternative automation methods.

· Guides part selection and supports transition from manual to robotic operations.

· Communicates effectively with cross-functional teams regarding issues and solutions.

· Contributes ideas for continuous workflow and process improvement.

· Supports training of operators and technicians on robotic cell operation.

Robotic Welding Programmer III

Focus: Strategy, leadership, creation, and complex problem-solving

· Leads development, optimization, and standardization of robotic & automation programs.

· Provides technical direction for complex automation and integration challenges.

· Drives design improvements and alternative methods in collaboration with engineering.

· Leads tooling and fixture design strategy to improve efficiency, quality, and uptime.

· Oversees transition of processes from manual to robotic operation.

JOB DESCRIPTION: ROBOTIC WELDING PROGRAMMER

· Partners closely with maintenance and engineering to improve equipment reliability.

· Identifies systemic issues and leads root-cause analysis and long-term corrective actions.

· Mentors and trains technicians across the facility in robotic cell operation and best practices.

· Reviews and validates engineering information for manufacturability.

· Sets priorities and adjusts work to meet changing manufacturing demands.

· Champions safety, continuous improvement, and best-in-class automation practices.

· Serves as escalation point for production, quality, and automation issues.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements

· Welding certificate, technical degree, or equivalent

· Experience with robotic weld cell operation

· Robotic weld programming experience (ABB preferred)

· AutoCAD/Inventor/3D CAD experience a plus

· Experience with robotic and/or automated equipment programming

· Familiarity with PLC programming (ABB Preferred).

· Experience with sheet metal fabrication, forming, cut-to-length, and/or press brake operation. AutoCAD/Inventor/3D CAD experience a plus
