GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Administers basic and advanced life support measures in accordance with established policies and procedures; provides transportation to victims of medical or traumatic emergencies to a medical facility; participates in other forms of emergency care and medical rescue as needed; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class performs highly responsible work involving the delivery of out-of-hospital basic and advanced life support services by responding to scenes of medical and traumatic emergencies, evaluating patients, and providing safe transportation to an appropriate medical facility with continuous care. Additional duties include the daily inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of the assigned emergency vehicle, supplies, and equipment with minor housekeeping duties as required. This employee must be capable of performing advanced life support procedures defined by the State of Delaware paramedic scope of practice, and not undertaken by emergency medical technicians, through written standing orders and protocols, or through direct contact with a medical control physician via telephone and/or radio communications. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years' experience as an Emergency Dispatcher, twenty-four (24) continuing education credits in a relevant course. For internal candidates: active participation in a departmental workgroup or project which shall be defined by the Chief of Emergency Communications or his/her designee, any record of discipline that resulted in a suspension during the twelve (12) months preceding the application for lateral transfer shall be reviewed to determine eligibility for lateral transfer and an overall performance rating of satisfactory or above in the year applying for the lateral transfer.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must successfully complete an approved training curriculum and maintain certifications in Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Protocols and a Basic Telecommunicator course. Must maintain continued favorable background throughout employment to maintain compliance with the rules and regulations to have access to Delaware Criminal Justice Information System - (DELJIS) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). PROBABLE WEIGHTING OF EXAMINATION: Candidates must pass an examination required for entry into the paramedic training program to continue in the process. A written examination, a comprehensive background investigation to include an oral board interview examination, an evaluation of training and education, or any combination of the above, may be used to determine placement on the eligible list. Candidates must also pass a qualifying fitness test. Successful candidates will be hired by New Castle County and entered in a paramedic training program, where students must maintain passing grades, remain enrolled in the paramedic training program and achieve certification as both a Nationally Registered and Delaware paramedic.
