Responsibilities

Location: Charlton Building

The Registered Nurse in Radiation Oncology provides care for patients whom are receiving or have received photon or proton radiation therapy.  The RN is accountable for the delivery of direct patient care including patient education, symptom assessment and management, conscious sedation and IV contrast administration.  The RN collaborates daily with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and radiation therapists.  The RN will assist in care coordination and research associated with clinical care.  The Radiation Oncology practice is continuing to expand to bring cutting edge cancer therapies to Mayo Clinic patients.  Being a part of the Radiation Oncology team, Nursing contributes to the overall success of the Department and its patients.

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.

Qualifications

Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). One year of RN experience required.  

All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.

Additional Qualifications:

The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. The Surgical Technologist functions primarily in the scrub role and is responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. You'll work closely with colleagues on liver-directed therapy, innovative treatments, research trials, cancer prevention vaccines, and assisting surgeons with intratumoral cancer procedures. Our on-site lab for venous collection allows you to collect samples from oncology and hematology patients using Ports and PICC lines, all while working alongside a supportive team. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is recognized as an expert in lactation knowledge and experience in breastfeeding situations.  The Lactation Consultant is available and collaborates with nursing units to provide a comprehensive lactation program which includes lactation services, education services, and continued program assessment. Lactation Consultants proactively talk with families before or assist soon after delivery with any perceived concerns. The IBCLC actively participates in Discharge Rounds. This Lactation consultant position functions collaboratively covering for lactation team members as needed at both hospitals and within the OB Clinic setting.

The lactation consultant is a clinical nurse expert working collaboratively to improve the quality of patient care and facilitate optimal outcomes in the establishment and maintenance of breastfeeding and lactation. As an expert the lactation consultant is an integral member of the healthcare team trained to counsel mothers and families on initiation, exclusivity, and duration of breastfeeding and to assist amidst any difficulties or high-risk situations. The lactation consultant focuses on health promotion and encourages self-care and parental decision-making prenatally and postnatally. The lactation consultant functions as a clinical nurse expert resource and educator, playing a vital role in educating patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members on evidenced based practices in breastfeeding and lactation to provide anticipatory guidance as well as to empower mothers and families to manage breastfeeding challenges as they arise. Qualifications

Qualifications

The licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN) or other assigned supervisor and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor in meeting the needs of the patient/family. The LPN collects data through observation and communicates information to assist the RN and/or provider in patient assessment and care planning. The LPN participates as a member of the health care team and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor and provider in meeting needs of the patient/family. The LPN delivers care in accordance with the patient care plan, policies and procedures of the organization and principles of relationship-based care. The LPN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and instructing; and may participate on committees or projects, including quality improvement projects.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Partner with providers, RNs, and allied health staff to deliver patient-centered care
  • Provide age-specific services, from newborn and pediatric rooming to adult and geriatric aftercare
  • Administer vaccines, medications, and treatments (injections, ear lavages, nebulizers, wound care, catheter care, suture/staple removal, vision/hearing screenings, fluoride varnish, etc.)
  • Manage patient communications via phone, online messages, and telehealth
  • Support preventative care and chronic condition management, reinforcing patient education
  • Independently manage nurse calendars, ensuring timely, accurate patient care
  • Contribute to quality initiatives by closing care gaps and improving outcomes

 

Primary Care patient services include health care for existing medical needs, preventative care, acute care, and management of chronic health conditions. Care is provided through in-person visits, phone, video and web-based care. LPNs in all primary care practices are valued members of the interprofessional care team, collaborating with physicians, advanced practitioners, non-licensed allied health professionals, registered nurses, and student learners. Primary Care locations offer a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that allows LPNs to work closely with an interdisciplinary team while building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients.

Family Medicine (2nd Floor of the Baldwin Building)

Patients of all ages — newborns through seniors. Care includes obstetrics, pediatrics, adult, and geriatric health. The Family Medicine practice offers LPNs the opportunity to work with patients across the lifespan. Family Medicine provides family-oriented comprehensive care, including obstetrical care and well-woman care, newborn and well-child care, pediatrics and adult and geriatric care. LPNs play a vital role in delivering patient-centered care such as immunizations, ear washes, reinforcing patient education, and chronic disease management. The role also involves supporting in-clinic procedures and balancing timely responses to patient requests via online messaging.

Qualifications

Graduate of a school of practical nursing or passed LPN Boards after a defined period in a professional nursing program (e.g., some states allow RN students to take the LPN board exam after completing one to two years in the RN program). If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of LPN experience working in an applicable setting is required.

One year LPN experience within the last five years preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work daytime hours, flexibility may be required to meet staffing needs. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing preferred. 

Current LPN license by applicable state requirements. Arizona and Florida: Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers. Midwest: Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area. Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) works collaboratively to improve the quality of patient care and promote desired patient outcomes in a designated population/specialty practice. The CNS functions as a leader within the three spheres of influence (Patient/Client, Nurses and Nursing Practice, Organization/System), and is an active participant in the nursing leadership team.

The Transplant Coordinator Nurse is accountable for the coordination of all aspects of care for the transplant patient population. Assesses and plans in collaboration with the patient, caregiver, and multidisciplinary healthcare team to meet needs across the care continuum. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and appropriately interprets information relative to the patient's age-specific needs. Provides patient and family education on a consistent basis.
