This full-time position reports either directly or through a Program Director to the Clinical Director of Psychiatry in the Division of Correctional Health Services and is responsible for the clinical oversight, management, and innovative development in specific mental health treatment areas, including standard mental observation (MO) units, specialty MO units and general population clinic settings in one of the 12 jail facilities in New York City. Approximately 25% of new admissions per year to the NYC jail system will receive care on the mental health service. The service strives to provide safe, holistic and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for the diverse range of mental health issues that face the population, from serious mental illness to the natural struggles that accompany incarceration. The service provides some of the most comprehensive and unique treatment modalities in the country, including specialty housing units for individuals with serious mental illness, a 24-hour on-call psychiatric service, robust creative arts programming, a strong DBT training program, clinics in each of the facilities, substance use treatment, integrated re-entry services, and relationships with multiple training institutions throughout the city.

The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the clinical integrity of the specific program or housing area to which they are assigned, including ensuring that all clinicians are providing appropriate and timely clinical interventions and documentation. Depending on the treatment area, s/he manages patient admissions and discharges, monitors and engages in treatment, oversees quality assurance, manages on-going training and education for treatment-area staff, and performs other managerial administrative tasks including liaising with DOC. In addition to direct supervisory and management responsibilities, the Clinical Supervisor also provides direct care to a small caseload of complex patients and is responsible for the accompanying medical record documentation. Clinical Supervisors who are qualified for and interested in providing care on the PACE or CAPS units (specialty MO units) for individuals with serious mental illness will report to a Program Director for direct supervision.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Formulate and implement procedures for operating, monitoring, and evaluating mental health programs and services in assigned area of responsibility
  • Develop and lead staff training programs and exercises to maintain a culture of learning and clinical excellence
  • Serve as the clinical leader for the assigned area of responsibility and provide weekly individual and in-person supervision for all assigned mental health clinical staff; review diagnostic, treatment, and level of care decisions and documentation; ensure adherence to policies and procedures; and conduct clinical case conferences

The Director of Infectious Disease Services will provide critical Infectious Disease expertise of infection control and supervise population health efforts to prevent morbidity and mortality from communicable illness. The Medspan program provides patient education and care coordination around HIV, hepatitis C, and associated conditions such as hepatitis B and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Medspan team members support patients through medication adherence support, discharge planning, and connection to care services. The Medical Director works across the Correctional Health Service Medicine service, with MedSpan staff and with other interdisciplinary Correctional Health Services (CHS) staff in all facilities to provide, improve, and evaluate patient centered infectious disease care.

Responsibilities include: (Detailed Task)

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Identify individuals admitted to correctional facilities with infectious disease (ID) needs through the utilization of electronic health records, report management systems, and various tracking tools.
  • Provide direct patient care to individuals experiencing acute or chronic infectious disease conditions, including but not limited to HIV, hepatitis C and B, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, skin and soft tissue infections, wounds, and systemic bacterial processes.
  • Deliver clinical consultation and guidance related to infectious diseases to site medical directors (SMD), infection control teams, and clinical staff.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Offer direct administrative and clinical supervision for the infectious disease service, encompassing ID clinicians and the Medspan team.
  • Oversee staffing requirements for the infectious disease service within the facility.
  • Direct the formulation and execution of workflows and protocols pertinent to the infectious disease service.
  • Organize and lead regularly scheduled rounds and meetings for the ID team.
  • Facilitate conferences and seminars with other clinical services and both CHS-based and external re-entry programs.
  • Provide supervisory clinical guidance to the SMD and staff of the communicable diseases unit (CDU).
  • Oversee admission and discharge criteria for patients with confirmed or suspected communicable diseases within the CDU.

Medspan Directorship:

  • Provide supervisory direction and guidance for the Medspan Program.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of staffing, workflows, and protocols for the Medspan team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Transports and utilizes required technology devices (tablet), infection control materials and supplies using VNS Health designated/supplied carrying case (backpack) weighing approximately 15 – 20 lbs to and from patient homes/care facilities, VNS Health offices and therapists’ home.

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:
New York State Certification as Physical Therapist Assistant Required Valid driver's license may be required, as determined by operational/regional needs.

Education:
Associate's Degree as Physical Therapist Assistant from a New York State approved program or whose educational credentials have been approved equivalent by New York State Required

Work Experience:
Minimum of two years experience in clinical patient care (per NY State Education Law) Required Bilingual skills may be required, as determined by operational needs. Basic PC skills Preferred
