Job Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides clinical and administrative support in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner. This role supports patient care delivery and ensures efficient office operations.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Prepare exam and treatment rooms, supplies, and instruments
- Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers
- Obtain and document vital signs and patient history in EMR
- Perform EKG, PFT, audiometry, Titmus testing (after competency validation)
- Perform UDS, BAT, phlebotomy, and other lab testing (after competency validation)

- Provide aseptic techniques to the workplace
- IV fluid therapy (administration and knowledge of colloids, crystalloids, transfusions and fluid additives)
- Dose calculations and constant rate infusions
- Handle and administer controlled substances
- Administration and knowledge of analgesic and anesthetic therapy to include opiates, non-steroidal medication, and inhalation anesthesia
- Monitor capabilities:
- ECG
- arterial blood pressure
- central venous pressure
- pulse oximetry
- esophageal stethoscope
- non-invasive blood pressure
- capnography
- Administer epidurals, dosage and dispensing of drugs
- Knowledge of fluid CRI’s
- Management of life-threatening emergencies, especially cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological problems, to include a. advanced CPR skills (with electrical defibrillation) b. maintenance of thoracostomy tubes c. emergency tracheostomy and tube care. assisted ventilation
- Knowledge of thoracoscopy and arthroscopy equipment and procedure
- Basic instrument/pack preparation and knowledge of steam/gas sterilization
- Preparation of lab samples
- Maintain a legal record of significant events and enhance recognition of trends in monitored variables
- Record all drugs administered to patient, noting the dose, time, and route of administration
- Record monitored variables on a regular basis (every 5 minutes) during anesthesia
- Computer input into a patient’s file
- Inspect the anesthesia machine, endotracheal tubes, and other anesthesia equipment before and after use assuring that the anesthetic machine and equipment are in proper working order
- Equipment troubleshooting: IV pumps, surgivet, Doppler, anesthesia machine, pulse ox
- Excellent communication skills with coworkers and with clients
- Plan procedures with other departments
- Train new hires, interns and externs
- Make sure the hospital is ready for the next shift/day (clean/stock)
- Complete any task listed by the supervisor
Minimum Requirements:
- Two years of experience working as a nursing team member in a surgery department or with heavy surgical responsibilities is required..
- Prior experience with anesthesia techniques and protocols is required.
- Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus!
- Credentialed as a Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT)
