Under the general supervision of an RN, the Nursing Student Extern performs selected duties pertaining to direct and indirect nursing care of the patient. Some examples of duties include performing treatment duties as requested by the licensed nurse, such as:
- application of slings
- routine patient feedings
- range of motion exercises

- complete and partial baths
- total personal hygiene care
- position and bed changes
- skin care
- assisting physicians with examinations
The Nursing Student Extern also performs additional nursing tasks under the direct supervision of an RN outlined in policy.

Our unit’s leadership works hard to provide a dynamic environment that supports both the professional and personal growth and development of all members of our team. The Women and Children’s Unit consists of 4 LDRP suites with labor tubs, 6 additional inpatient rooms, 3 observation rooms and a fully equipped Operating Room.
On-call: Required.

Our Emergency Room Nurses are trained in ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ESI, and AVADE. We highly encourage our staff to become certified in Emergency Nursing (CEN) and Pediatric Emergency Nursing (CPEN). Our nurses also have the opportunity to participate in our Shared Governance Councils and to advance their careers through our Clinical Advancement program. This shift is scheduled for 11am - 11pm.

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the CVMC Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as part of our Critical Care Team is responsible for direct and indirect professional nursing care to patients including:
- Provides direct care to assigned patients in conformance with hospital policies, professional standards, physician orders, and approved plan of care.
- Responsible for indirect nursing functions and activities of assigned nursing personnel.
- Serves as patient advocate.
- Provides teaching, counseling and emotional comfort to patients and family members.
- Functions within limits of Vermont Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and hospital and nursing department policies and procedures. Supports philosophy, objectives, and goals of nursing department. Nursing process will be utilized in the provision of patient care.
Experience:
- One year of experience of ICU experience to be proficient in all phases of assigned duties.
On-call: Not required.
