Summary

Accurately assesses residents' health status as well as their educational and environmental needs on admission and on an ongoing basis. Accurately documents the care plan on admission, cognition change, or regulatory requirements for care planning. Identifies necessary nursing interventions relevant to the plan of care which includes nursing orders, physician orders, residents/families educational and environmental needs. Interventions such as medication administration, treatments, and IV fluid administrations are accomplished in a safe and timely manner. Documents all interventions accurately and timely. Uses critical thinking skills when dealing with residents' change in condition. Notifies the physician timely using the SBARR as the communication tool. Maintains composure during and handles any crisis situation such as family dissatisfaction, staff disputes, or inclement weather in a calm and professional manner. The care is moderate to high acuity providing care with a high complexity of interventions which includes Leukemia care, Autologous Stem Cell transplants, Donor cellular infusions, post allogeneic complications, Graft vs. Host disease and a focus on Clinical trials. The multidisciplinary group of care providers includes Bone Marrow transplant physicians, oncology nurses, Case managers, coordinators, social workers, spiritual care, pharmacy and psycho-social support.

The General Surgery floor and intermediate care unit is located on north campus in the Schoenberg Pavilion and is a bariatric center of excellence. The nurses care for patients who undergo innovative surgeries including plastic reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, endocrine oncology, and ophthalmology. The intermediate care unit provides monitoring of adult surgical patients that do not meet criteria for ICU but require a higher level of care such as continuous cardiac monitoring, frequent I & O, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, initiation of CPAP/BIPAP, frequent vital signs, and intravenous medication management of approved medications.

Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Acute Care Medicine has patients with a full range of clinical issues-from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma and a multitude of other conditions and diseases. Due to the patient acuity on the nursing division, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is lead by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse. The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse. Additionally each unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisiplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
