As a Medical Assistant/LPN at MercyOne, you will be responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and wellbeing of all patients.  Accurately preforms preliminary physical tests such as:  measures blood pressure, records weight, temperature, pulse and respirations and other measures as directed by established clinical protocols.  

  • Obtain and record vital signs including but not limited to, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, and current medications and presenting problem.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.

  • Demonstrates the ability to organize work and enhance the safety and quality of patient care, service and treatment.
  • Proficient in IV skills.
  • Review charts to ensure completeness in documentation.
  • Prepares for cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of the patient and physician.
  • Provides a safe environment for customers: patient, family, physicians and staff.
  • Collects and analyzes data and assesses patient in developing nursing diagnosis / plan of care.

Education:

  • Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa. 
  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire.  Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
  • Basic computer knowledge including Microsoft office products. Helpful if familiar with ProVation RN & MD.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified or obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English language.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

4. BLS, Mandatory Reporter. 

5. ACLS within 12 months of hire.

6. Cardiac monitoring course and/or select units of advance Nursing / Critical Care Course or comparable training

7. TNCC

8. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI) within 6 months of hire

9. High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.

8. Basic computer skills required.

9. Ability to work with diverse groups of people.

10. Ability to work under pressure and with a large degree of independence and accountability.

12. If caring for ECMO patients:

  • Attend and satisfy all the requirements of a formal course of study that is based upon the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), designed by the ECLS Program Coordinator, and approved by the ECLS Program Medical Director.
  • Complete (72) hours of supervised ECLS case management experience
  • First (36) hours obtained with a qualified preceptor at the pump
  • Remaining (36) hours obtained as the primary pump specialist with a veteran specialist as the patient’s bedside RN
  • Satisfactorily participate in an introductory (8) hour ECLS competency simulation workshop verified by the ECLS Coordinator and ECLS Medical Director.
  • Satisfy annual requirements to maintain status as an ECLS specialist.

 

Position Purpose:

Provides and directs safe, effective and culturally competent care for high risk, critically acute patients with actual or potential life-threatening conditions.  Through evidence-based practice, utilizes critical thinking to assess, plan, implement and evaluate outcome-based care of patients. Provides care to critically ill patients including cardiovascular and surgical patients.  May assume responsibilities and accountability for assigned ECMO patients.  Supervises and coordinates care provided to patients by the LPN, Patient Care Assistants and other nursing team members. Facilitates communication with physicians, patient and family, other departments and/or team members.
