GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The physician assistant (PA) is a licensed provider who has acquired a broad range of knowledge and skills through the successful completion of a physician assistant program. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of neurology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The physician assistant works under the supervision of an attending physician and reports directly to the department chief physician assistant administratively. The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy. The nocturnist Neurology Physician Assistant I is a critical member of the Neurology inpatient team located at Brigham and Women?s Hospital. In concert with the supervising and attending physicians the PA will provide direct patient care and management for patients suffering from neurologic disease. The PA is responsible for assisting attending physicians and nurses and other care team members in the medical management of patients assigned to the inpatient service. The nocturnist PA will work 3-4 twelve-hour shifts per week and help cover the inpatient service overnight alongside a neurology resident. The PA will help with new neurology patient admissions that come through the emergency department, the neurology ICU, or outside hospital transfers.

Neurology Inpatient Responsibilities:
Performs patient histories and physicals and Neurology exams, documents information accurately in the patient medical record in a timely fashion
Learns and performs neuro-diagnostic procedures (e.g. lumbar punctures) as needed to support patient care
Examines and evaluates patients and assists in development of their treatment plan with physicians; recommends and/or enters orders as needed to support high quality patient care management
Appropriately follows up on patient treatment plans to ensure plan of care is carried out; communicates with attending/referring physicians, nurses, and other care team members as appropriate
Appropriately responds to emergency situations; manages patient issues as they arise, to the extent that the PA will obtain and evaluate studies/labs, write orders, obtain consultations and interpret lab values radiology studies with the assistance of the supervising physicians as necessary
Stays up to date on the latest literature in Neurology care
Maintains active PA licensure, MCSR/DEA licensure, and BLS/ACLS certification Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: The appropriate candidate will have successfully completed a graduate level physician assistant program (master's degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA). Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) must be obtained prior to first day of employment. The PA must hold a current valid license or be eligible for licensure as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The PA must maintain a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration and must complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each two-year period of employment.

Job Summary
Summary: The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes General Responsibilities: The PA nocturnist will be required to work nights (shifts 6 pm to 6 am), Monday through Sunday, on a rotating schedule covering inpatients on the Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery and Urology services. This position will also require coverage on Saturdays and Sundays 6 am to 6 pm on a rotating basis. This is a full-time position with variation of hours on site per week. This work will include receiving patient sign outs from residents/PAs in a timely fashion, and caring for inpatients during assigned shifts. It will also include creating work lists for each service for the following day and providing sign out of overnight events to the resident/PA in the morning. The PA will also be required to evaluate patients on service who have an acute change in clinical status. The PA will be required to have basic surgical knowledge and skills in the management of post-operative patients including removal of surgical drains, removal of central lines, removal and placement of urinary catheters, placement and removal of nasogastric tubes and basic suturing. The PA will also be required to help with patient throughput, including inpatients but also patients admitted to the Extended Recovery and Post Anesthesia Care Units who will be discharged the following morning or admitted to the floor. Finally, the PA may be required to assist in the operating room on cases that extend into the late evening or for emergency surgical procedures. However, it is anticipated that the majority of will be spent managing non-OR, floor issues. Otolaryngology (ORL) Service Requirements: The PA will be required to have or develop knowledge of basic ORL procedures not limited to but including: total thyroidectomy, radical neck dissection, retropharyngeal abscess drainage and complex head and neck cancer resections and flaps. The PA will be required to be trained in epistatxis management with nasal packing and removal, tracheostomy tube changes, drainage of superficial abscesses and NG tube and small bore feeding tube placement in complex post-op patients. Plastic Surgery Service Requirements: The PA will be required to have or develop knowledge of basic plastic surgery procedures not limited to be including: breast reconstruction (allograft, implants, tissue expanders), complex wound management, skin grafts and complex flap reconstruction. The PA will be required to be trained in the following procedure skills and maintain competency in: incision and drainage of superficial abscesses, suturing, removal of drains. Urology Service Requirements: The PA will be required to have or develop knowledge of basic urology procedures not limited to but including: lithotripsy, transurethral resection of the prostate, penile implants, artificial urinary sphincter insertion, prostatectomy and cystectomy. The PA will be required to be trained in the following procedure skills and maintain competency in: placement of difficult urinary catheters, management of 3-way urinary catheters with and without irrigation, replacement/change of suprapubic tubes and bladder irrigation. The School of Physician Assistant Studies seeks a full-time faculty member to deliver high quality learning experiences and education for students. The faculty member will engage in teaching, service and scholarship activities, and works collaboratively with colleagues across the University as well as with the Program Director. Additionally, the incumbent provides mentorship to students and contributes to the visibility, impact and reputation of the University and its programs through research and scholarly engagement. The selected candidate will have responsibilities teaching classroom and laboratory courses to physician assistant students, assessing assignments, providing advisement and remediation, conducting clinical site visits and facilitating simulation activities. Subject matters may include clinical medicine, healthcare issues, clinical anatomy, patient assessment skills, pharmacology, physiology/pathophysiology, emergency medicine, medical procedures & surgery skills, special populations, professional development. This is a 0.8 FTE benefited position, scheduled to work 28 hours per week. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience.
- Deliver didactic, laboratory and/or experiential instruction via multiple formats (in-person, online, or in a ?blended' format) in the Physician Assistant Studies program.
- Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria.
