Within the Hardware Engineering Organization, the Undersea & Electronics Systems (UES) Department leads the mechanical design, development, and integration of products, including but not limited to undersea sensors and analysis, naval platforms, shipboard/ground-based processing and power equipment, and launchers.
The UES department is looking for a full-time Principle Mechanical Engineer. This role will be on-site and located in Portsmouth, RI.
What You Will Do
- Perform complex mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub-assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
- Lead a team of hardware engineers to develop and mature designs from initial concept to formal technical data package generation (engineering drawings, models) and culminating in initial builds, testing, transition to production, and production support
- Work with limited supervision and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers
- Lead efforts to develop design peer review packages, resolve action items, and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions
- Present technical content to senior leadership and customer representatives
- Occasional CONUS travel to customer sites or suppliers is generally required. International and longer duration travel assignments may be available but optional
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
- Experience in leading development efforts and teams with cost and schedule responsibility
- Extensive experience in the maritime or defense industries, including the design /build/test of mechanical designs that operate is these environments.
- Extensive experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), Tolerance Analysis, metal fabrication (machining, sheet metal), assembly joining techniques (fasteners, rivets, inserts)
- Experience with CAD modeling and Engineering Documentation practices.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer
- Experience in the specification, design, development, production and testing of electronics systems in maritime environments. Specific knowledge of packaging electronic equipment to meet physical and environmental constraints is preferred
- Extensive experience with areas of the program lifecycle from pre-proposal technical baseline development to product test and evaluation
- Experience managing financial and schedule performance of program level tasking. Experience and certifications in Earned Value Project Management preferred
- Demonstrated ability to solve difficult problems and determine root cause and corrective actions while leading a cross functional team. Experience with assessing program risk and opportunity impacts of the selected path forward is preferred
- Strong communication skillset with ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences

THE ROLE
PEG is searching for motivated individuals who demonstrate a commitment and enthusiasm for Energy Efficiency, Energy Sustainability, and Building Energy Performance of New Residential Construction. This position requires you to become a certified HERS Rater. Learn more at this position, new employees will be provided with paid on the job training that will prepare them to perform Home Energy Audits in accordance with RESNET Guidelines. This will include visual inspections of materials, data collection and visual observation of energy efficient features, and the utilization of equipment to test system performance.
