General Surgery 3W provides care for patients recovering from a variety of surgical procedures, ranging from simple appendectomies to complex colon resections requiring colostomy placement. This unit also specializes in bariatric procedures and offers hands-on experience with postoperative monitoring, wound care, pain management, and surgical recovery pathways.

Develops and maintains a collaborative and collegial relationship with physicians and interdepartmental personnel as they relate to the care of the surgical patient. Participates in marketing of operating room services to the medical staff. Maintains competent peri-operative skill level to ensure provision of safe quality patient care is sensitive to the needs of patients, families and fellow co-workers; plans and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with age specific needs; plan and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with any identified cultural diversity needs (such as religions, lifestyles, beliefs, physical capabilities, and cultures); plans and provides professional nursing care for patients by assuring appropriate and effective pain management; assess, report, and assist any patients that present with evidence of abuse and/or neglect; and supports the mission of Mercy. Co-workers are expected to abide by Mercy Hospital safety and infection control policies to maintain a safe environment for patients and co-workers. Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school, Successful completion of medication administration math competency test.
Licensure: RN licensure in the state of practice.
Experience: Six months OR experience at Mercy Hospital. Proficient in Level I requirements as defined per policy.
Certifications: ACLS (if not current, coworker will be scheduled in next available class); CPR
Other: Proficient in Level I requirements as defined per policy. Provide annual in-service specific to clinical ladder specialty area, as defined per policy, being achieved. Knowledge of room setup, instruments and equipment needs (including setting up the sterile field and troubleshooting the equipment) specific for specialty area, as defined per policy, being achieved. Knowledge of mixing and/or administration of all specialty products (i.e., medications, hemostatic agents, etc.).

Preferred Experience: One year medical-surgical experience and/or one year operating room experience preferred.
Preferred Other: Progressive leadership skills desired.

Qualifications:

• Required Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited registered professional nursing program.
    • Preferred Education: BSN

• Licensure: 
  • Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current RN license within the hiring state and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed and must meet all state board of nursing requirements.

• REQUIRED Experience:
  • One year of recent bed-side RN experience to work Med Surg. 
  • For all other specialties (ICU, etc.) a minimum of two years of recent bed-side RN experience.
    • Preferred Experience: Epic experience

• Certifications (Must have to start):
  • For Med Surg and Behavioral Health - BLS
  • For Critical Care (CC) - BLS, ACLS
• Physical Requirements/Demands: 
  • Stand/Walk most of the time on duty; significant amount of bending and stooping, as well as lifting and turning patients with assistance; push/pull/grip up to 50 pounds

Overview:

Are you seeking a flexible incentivized Licensed Practical Nurse position?  Ability to pick up day shift OR night shift - whatever works best for you!  No weekend, holiday, or shift requirement. Participation in the Gig Nursing Program requires being responsible for scheduling a minimum number of hours, being available on short notice, being flexible and subject to last minute shift cancellation. The Gig Nursing Program does not offer guaranteed shift hours and will be the first for cancellation.

The Licensed Practical Nurse - GIG will float between the designated Mercy Hospital facilities of their choice.

Departments Utilizing GIG LPNs:

• Behavioral Health (BH)

• Emergency Department (ED)

• Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

• Medical-Surgical (MS)
