The Role - Product Engineer, Tech Lead
We are seeking a Tech Lead to partner with our existing technical leadership to mobilize our engineering team as we scale our product to help tens of thousands more students and partner with dozens more alternative education partners, financing hundreds of millions of dollars of loans and other financial products. The ideal candidate is exceptionally strong at decomposing challenging problems, fluent in Javascript/Typescript, and opinionated about UX & APIs, but is also passionate about growing people around them and instilling in others best practices.

Key Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and maintain a robust application management and loan repayment platform, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability across front-end and back-end systems
- Leverage full-stack engineering skills to contribute alongside team and build a polished & accessible end-user experience that tens of thousands of students and program administrators love, and develop best of breed API on reliable infrastructure for our partners to leverage
- Set best practices for code quality, system design, and security while mentoring engineers and conducting code reviews
- Oversee 2-3 engineers' day-to-day operations with the support of the Director of Engineering
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to define and prioritize work, break down large initiatives into achievable milestones, and balance technical debt with new feature development
- Spec out stories with the engineering team and product leadership, and lead the team in continually reflecting on how to better deliver value and operate as a team
- Foster a strong engineering culture through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in future on-call rotations and ensure by building self-healing and resilient systems and leveraging infrastructure as code and monitoring tools that our systems are highly available
Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent bootcamp or upskilling program experience
- Hands-on experience managing CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI, or similar) and ownership of deployment strategies, release management, and production monitoring
- Experience working closely with Product teams to define technical requirements and Compliance teams to ensure regulatory adherence in financial services or similarly regulated environments.
- Ability to clearly articulate technical trade-offs, align stakeholders, and make informed decisions under ambiguity.
- 4+ years working in a SaaS startup regularly building and owning the complete E2E technology stack for Web Application (Frontend + Backend + Cloud + CI/CD)
- Deep experience with a combination of the following technologies:
- Javascript & TypeScript (React, NextJS, Recoil (other state management libraries)), Python (Django, Flask, FastAPI, etc.), HTML, CSS
- Databases: SQL (we use PostgreSQL)
- Cloud: AWS or Google Cloud experience
- Design: We use Figma; understanding of responsive design
- DevOps: Experience with CI/CD and modern cloud and container tooling

Compensation
The salary range for this position is competitive and will be commensurate with the candidate's experience, qualifications, and industry knowledge, ranging between $155,000 to $190,000 annually. About Joslin Diabetes Center World-renowned for its deep expertise in diabetes treatment and research, Joslin Diabetes Center is dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes and ensuring that people with diabetes live long, healthy lives. As one of only 18 NIH-designated Diabetes Research Centers in the United States, and affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Joslin is at the forefront of developing and disseminating innovative patient therapies and scientific discoveries globally. Joslin provides highly specialized diabetes care and education to over 20,000 adults and children annually. Its clinical models are recognized as the standard of care for treating diabetes and related complications both in the United States and around the world. The center's team of diabetes educators, including nurses, dieticians, and exercise physiologists, are nationally certified by the American Diabetes Association, ensuring the highest quality of care and education for patients.
The President and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will serve as a visionary leader responsible for shaping and advancing the scientific and strategic direction of the Joslin Diabetes Center. This executive role will guide innovative research initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and maintaining Joslin's position at the forefront of diabetes care and discovery. Working collaboratively with Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) and other strategic partners, the President and CSO will foster a high-performance scientific culture that integrates research excellence with business strategy, regulatory integrity, and clinical impact. The President and CSO will also champion Joslin's unique identity and autonomy as an independent center of excellence, while uniting research, clinical and administrative leadership to drive transformative outcomes in diabetes science and care. As part of this role, the President and CSO will also hold an academic appointment as Full or Associate Professor in the Field of Diabetes at Harvard Medical School (HMS), commensurate with experience, training, achievements, and teaching activities. This is a pivotal leadership position which will present the opportunity to shape our scientific vision, drive transformative innovation, and make a meaningful impact across the organization and beyond.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Define and implement the scientific vision and long-term strategic roadmap for Joslin Diabetes Center, aligning research, patient care, and education missions
- Ensure integration with BILH while preserving Joslin's unique identity as an independent center of excellence
- Establish and implement strategic priorities in collaboration with the Joslin Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team
- Oversee all core departments, including Research, Clinical Services, Fiscal Services, Fundraising, Commercial Ventures, Quality, and Academia

Qualifications
- MD, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant clinical or scientific field with a focus on diabetes or endocrinology
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience in academic medicine, diabetes research, or integrated health systems
- Proven track record of leading complex, multi-institutional integration initiatives
- Deep understanding of diabetes care delivery, translational research, and academic faculty development, with a specific emphasis on diabetes and related metabolic disorders
- Exceptional interpersonal, strategic, planning, and change management skills, demonstrating the ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams in a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment

- Manages and updates complex CVs for faculty, incorporating new information as it arises.
- Drafts written correspondence and templates for faculty use, including updating and revising as needed.
- Coordinates and ensures the timely completion and submission of faculty recommendation letters.
Faculty Support:
- Provides administrative support for up to three additional core and/or research faculty, including calendar management, travel planning, processing reimbursements, and scheduling conference rooms.
Office Support and Operations:
- Serves as the point of contact for the Center for Bioethics by staffing the front desk, greeting visitors, answering the main phone line, addressing basic inquiries, and triaging center email to the appropriate staff.
- Orders and maintains office supply inventory and organizes storage spaces to ensure availability of essential items.
- Serves as primary liaison with the mailroom; develops instructions for mailing procedures for faculty and staff, and manages incoming/outgoing mail.
- Coordinates with Harvard security for employee building access, including granting and removing swipe access during onboarding and offboarding.
- Works with the Event Management System (EMS) to reserve office and conference spaces and to develop/revise step-by-step instructions for staff and faculty on room bookings.
- Maintains shared workspaces and meeting rooms to ensure cleanliness, order, and availability of equipment and computer peripherals at each workstation.
- Acts as liaison to facilities and IT regarding routine office repairs and issues, reporting, tracking, and following up on resolution.
Process Development:
- Drafts and revises process improvements and operational procedures, submitting drafts for approval to the Associate Director of Finance and Operations. Examples include (but are not limited to): overseeing the procurement and tracking of office equipment, maintaining and updating inventory systems.
- Developing and maintaining the supply ordering process and updating as needed.
- Drafting, disseminating, and updating room reservation instructions for the EMS system
Program and Event Support:
- Provides support for Center programs, including website updates, and assistance with events such as conferences, lectures, seminars, and public forums.
- Handles logistics such as scheduling rooms and media services, maintaining the Center's schedule for office and desk use.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Contributes to the overall success of the Center by accomplishing other tasks or special projects as needed.
