Participates in marketing of operating room services to the medical staff. Maintains competent peri-operative skill level to ensure provision of safe quality patient care is sensitive to the needs of patients, families and fellow co-workers; plans and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with age specific needs; plan and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with any identified cultural diversity needs (such as religions, lifestyles, beliefs, physical capabilities, and cultures); plans and provides professional nursing care for patients by assuring appropriate and effective pain management; assess, report, and assist any patients that present with evidence of abuse and/or neglect; and supports the mission of Mercy. Co-workers are expected to abide by Mercy Hospital safety and infection control policies to maintain a safe environment for patients and co-workers. The RN assures that the philosophy, mission, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of Mercy are followed.Position Details:

8 hour shifts 5x8

Rotating weekends, holidays, and call

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school, Successful completion of medication administration math competency test.
Licensure: RN licensure in the state of practice.
Experience: Six months OR experience at Mercy Hospital. Proficient in Level I requirements as defined per policy.
Certifications: ACLS (if not current, coworker will be scheduled in next available class); CPR
Other: Proficient in Level I requirements as defined per policy. Provide annual in-service specific to clinical ladder specialty area, as defined per policy, being achieved. Knowledge of room setup, instruments and equipment needs (including setting up the sterile field and troubleshooting the equipment) specific for specialty area, as defined per policy, being achieved. Knowledge of mixing and/or administration of all specialty products (i.e., medications, hemostatic agents, etc.).

Preferred Experience: One year medical-surgical experience and/or one year operating room experience preferred.
Preferred Other: Progressive leadership skills desired.

•    Position requires the ability to push, pull, and/or lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.
•    Position requires prolonged standing and walking during each shift.

About the Unit — Neurology (8E)

 Neurology 8E cares for patients experiencing acute and chronic neurological conditions such as strokes, seizures, brain tumors, and brain bleeds. Team members gain valuable experience supporting complex neuro assessments, safety-focused care, and close interdisciplinary collaboration with therapy and neurology teams.

Overview

Orthopedics

Specializes in elective knee and hip replacements, spine procedures (neck and back), and foot/ankle surgeries. Strong focus on mobility, pain management, and postoperative care.

Med Surg – 5E

Typical diagnoses include small bowel obstructions, respiratory infections, cellulitis, diverticulitis, and pneumonia.

Med Surg – 5W

Clinical profile similar to 5E, with common diagnoses such as bowel obstructions, respiratory illnesses, and cellulitis.

General Surgery – 3W

Cares for surgical patients ranging from simple appendectomies to complex colon resections with colostomy placement. This unit also specializes in bariatric surgery.

Medical Telemetry – 7E & 7W

Care for patients with cellulitis, pneumonia, UTIs, chest pain, GI issues, COPD exacerbations, and medically stable COVID. Continuous telemetry monitoring helps refine cardiac and rhythm‑interpretation skills.

Oncology – 8W

Serves patients undergoing chemotherapy, cancer treatment, end‑of‑life care, and general medical patients. Also supports neuro‑medical overflow as needed.

About the Department:

Mercy Hospital South Emergency Department is known for its exceptional teamwork and abundant learning opportunities. Our ED includes triage, behavioral health, and super track areas. We are a Level 2 Trauma Center, Level 1 Stroke and STEMI center, with Comprehensive Stroke Certification. We treat all patients, from adults to pediatrics, and handle cases ranging from low acuity to critical care.

Upcoming Expansion: Construction has begun to nearly double the size of our Emergency Department. We are expanding from 61 to 73 beds, including six larger trauma bays and a dedicated 13-bed behavioral health area. The new ICU-like layout will enhance patient care with smaller room pods and improved nurse visibility. The waiting area will also be expanded for greater comfort. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027, increasing the ED's size to over 65,000 square feet from the current 39,000 square feet.

Education: Graduate of an accredited registered professional nursing program.
Licensure: Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current Missouri RN license and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed and must meet all state board of nursing requirements.
