Summary: Performs beginning level of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of the clinical activities in the UNCHCS.

Responsibilities: 1.

Instructs patients in preparing for tests that require fasting.

Answers patient questions regarding the tests.

Maintains equipment and investigates problems with equipment.

3.

May assist in teaching Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees.

May monitor daily operation of laboratory section or work area.

May participate on teams or individually perform special projects/assignments.

Performs a variety of routine and standardized tests using standard techniques and equipment.

Prepares specimens, resolves specimen problems, and performs analytical tests.

Labels and stores specimens.

7.

Prepares reagents and assists in the preparation of standard and control materials.

Monitors levels of reagents and assists in maintaining supplies.

8.

Records results of tests and maintains records.

Provides test results, reporting deviations from the norm to supervisor or ordering physician.

• Assess, plan and evaluate the nursing care needs of the patient before, during and after a surgical procedure.
• Participate in the care of patients receiving conscious sedation.

Registered Nurse provides direct patient care services in accordance with legal, ethical and institution standards. Provides nursing care of a general nature to inmates in the institution hospital/clinic, and may be provided to patients in specific areas, e.g., psychiatric, operating room, orthopedics, geriatrics, etc. Develops a nursing assessment for each patient, to include planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care. May assess and identify high risk symptoms/behaviors in patients, to include suicidal risk, homicidal risk and risk for verbal and/or physical abuse. Completes nutritional screening as part of the assessment and refers patient to a dietitian for a nutritional assessment if necessary. Monitors, evaluates and revises the plan of care as needed. May also assess and document the discharge planning needs of a patient. Delegates and coordinates care based on assessments.
