Qualifications:

A certificate for training as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner and current or pending license in Maryland- Must be free from discipline

At least one year of experience in surgical or emergency care

Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, organizational, and time management skills


Work Schedule:

Full-time, Monday through Friday, with flexibility required for occasional after-hours work.

  • Coordinates and evaluates day to day patient care related operations of the department coordinating and facilitating a variety of health care specialists within the department.
  • Provides clinical expertise to staff medical and nursing students and patients. Provides education to nursing personnel and to GUH and local communities by offering in-service training.
  • Provides patient care in a safe efficient and effective manner under the supervision of the attending physician and Nurse Manager. May participate in daily rounds. Reviews discharge orders and provide patients and families with education and instructions for post op care. Documents individualized nursing care for inpatients. Provides case management with approved discharge planning for individuals.
  • Collaborates in the development of principles of patient care while maintaining communication with appropriate allied services and agencies. Promptly requests consults from other services when indicated. Makes referrals to appropriate agencies and/or support systems to facilitate patient well-being. Works with nursing administration and/or nursing service to facilitate and improve patient care. Serves as liaison for the Department program by attending assigned meetings as a representative of the department.
  • Assists physicians with patient's history. Documents individualized nursing care for outpatients. Provides educational materials and instruction for patients and families regarding the diagnosis treatment options and side effects and prognosis.
  • Provides patient care via telephone for patients under supervision of attending physicians. Triages calls and coordinates with medical staff and/or other resource to ensure appropriate care. Returns phone calls the day they are received. Refills prescriptions under attending physician's supervision. Documents phone calls and notifies attending physician of pertinent information.
  • Identifies QA/AI indicators for service and participates in data collection and analysis related to indicators. Consults with appropriate medical staff to identify and reinforce issues related to modification in practice and standards of care.
  • Develops teaching aids and prepares individualized patient care plans.
  • Assists physicians with various research protocols by identifying candidates for research studies and assisting research coordinators.
  • Coordinates hospital staff to facilitate inpatient and outpatient care and compliance with patient/family-centered care standards.
  • Follows up with patients who have recently undergone surgery sees patients daily post-operatively under the supervision of attending physicians to ensure appropriate follow-up educational materials discharge plans etc.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree Nursing required, Master's degree Nursing preferred
  • 3-4 years patient care experience involving supervising nursing staff and designing implementing and monitoring policies and procedures 
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in District of Columbia required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required

General Summary of Position
Provides educational leadership for professional nursing practice in alignment with the mission vision values and goals of the Division of Nursing/MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Magnet designation. Exemplifies and promotes excellence in education practice and research through leadership and mentorship of nursing staff and through collaborative multidisciplinary relationships within the medical center as well as throughout local regional and national arenas. Uses adult learning principles and instructional strategies to assess design implement and evaluate continuing nursing education programs that enhance and promote clinical competency and standards of care. Promotes disseminates and integrates evidence-based practice performance improvement and nursing research into clinical practice. Supports and facilitates certification of clinical nurses. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Serves as a positive role model/mentor/leader for nursing staff at all times. Facilitates the development of staff for both the preceptor and mentor role.
  • Assesses learning needs of the nursing staff on the assigned unit/s at least once per year.
  • Plans develops implements and evaluates unit-based orientation and other educational programs including specialty fellowship programs using adult learning principles and strategies to meet the learning needs of the nursing staff to ensure competency and to advance the skills and knowledge of the nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with others to increase efficiency and reduce duplication of resources.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement and Quality activities projects and nursing research studies via committees councils task forces and conferences.
  • Facilitates and promotes the integration of evidence-based practice research and tenants of Magnet.
  • Develops implements and evaluates policies procedures and standards.
  • Advances supports and facilitates certification of staff nurses on units.
  • Provides education consultation for staff nursing students nursing managers and others within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Participates in Councils Committees Task Forces and Work Groups at the unit department hospital and system level. Provides leadership mentoring when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with contracted schools of nursing to clarify clinical objectives and promote appropriate undergraduate and graduate learning experiences.
  • Promotes MGUH and own advanced nursing practice by membership in professional organizations providing poster and podium presentations at conferences and active participation in other professional/educational opportunities.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing required
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree in Nursing Education or other related field preferred

Experience

  • 5-7 years Clinical experience preferred
  • 1-2 years 2 years in a university teaching hospital preferred
  • Clinical education experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Cert Nurse Educator - CNE Certification in Nursing Education or clinical area within 1 Year required
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Role model excellence in professional nursing.
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills with a solid clinical background as it pertains to the specialty area.
  • Ability to assess needs of learners design curricula develop education programs teach and guide learners and evaluate learning to implement evidence-based practice and research using adult learning principles.
