The Director of Business Operations serves as the Foundation’s senior accounting and financial operations leader, overseeing all administrative, accounting, and financial functions. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, safeguarding financial assets, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and contractual obligations.

The Director reports to the Foundation Executive Director and works closely with both Foundation and McIntire School leadership, as well as managing the Foundation Staff Accountant. The Director collaborates with University partners, Board committees, and external stakeholders including auditors, legal counsel, and benefits and retirement advisors.


Key Responsibilities


Accounting, Finance & Audit

β€’ Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and adherence to financial policies and procedures

β€’ Work closely with both the McIntire School and McIntire Foundation leadership to promote and support the School’s goals and priorities

β€’ Oversee annual Foundation budget process, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and fiscal responsibility; prepare monthly and quarterly budget reports

β€’ Monitor cashflow and ensure adequate liquidity

β€’ Maintain accurate and complete records of the Foundation’s 230+ funds, adhering to donor restrictions and board designations

β€’ Oversee endowment management, including accurate records of principal (corpus) and earnings, compliance with endowment agreements, and timely and accurate quarterly distributions from UVIMCO

β€’ Supervise the Staff Accountant to ensure timely and accurate completion of accounts payable, employee expense reimbursements, and weekly, monthly, and annual closing of the books

β€’ Serve as the key contact to external auditors and prepare for all aspects of the annual audit

β€’ Prepare annual financial statements and IRS Form 990 drafts and related work papers

β€’ Oversee the Foundation’s UVA Fund/Truist Visa purchasing card program

β€’ Provide oversight of the student club brokerage accounts


Administration, Governance & Compliance


β€’ Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, applicable UVA policies, and Foundation policies

β€’ Manage annual compliance documents for the Foundation Board of Trustees

β€’ Oversee charitable solicitation registration requirements

β€’ Oversee annual insurance renewals and property and risk management matters

β€’ Collaborate with Foundation leadership to prepare agendas and materials for biannual Foundation Board of Trustees meetings and Audit, Finance, and Investment Committee meetings

β€’ Oversee the implementation and administration of employee benefit and retirement plans

β€’ Supervise payroll processing

β€’ Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations

β€’ Perform other duties as requested by the Executive Director or Assistant Dean for Budget

Political Affairs Internship:

The role focuses on making poverty a focus of U.S., Canadian and U.K. foreign policy. This is a part-time 12-hours per week, 12 week, unpaid remote internship. If your availability is limited, you can work ahead and complete the program in fewer weeks.

Responsibilities will include:

Leading public and political outreach in your state and district.
Meeting with members of Congress/Government in your State/District/Constituency.
Representing The Borgen Project at various business, political and community events.
Assisting with fundraising. Create a personal fundraising campaign and meet targets.
Mobilizing individuals to contact their members of Government in support of key poverty-reduction legislation.
Speaking to groups, classes and organizations.
Writing letters of support for key programs to political leaders, media and other groups.

Experience:

No prior experience is necessary, we're looking for people who are passionate about fighting poverty and righting wrongs, regardless of your GPAs/background.

Details:

This is an unpaid internship, although college credit is available. The position can be worked remotely from any of the following countries: U.S., U.K., Canada, France or Australia.
