Senior Engineer, Project Development - (Geismar, Louisiana, U.S.A.)

This position is located in Geismar, LA, U.S.A.

Reporting to the Manager, Process Engineering, the Senior Project Development Engineer is responsible for leading the development of projects within the site’s five-year capital plan. This includes the identification, prioritization, and front-end development of all capital projects prior to handover to the Project Engineering team for execution.

The role provides leadership in early-stage project definition - guiding efforts from concept through feasibility—while ensuring alignment with site strategies, capital plans, and Nutrien’s long-term business objectives. The Senior Project Development Engineer delivers thorough technical and economic evaluations, drives cross-functional collaboration, and applies sound engineering judgment to support well-founded project decisions and strategic prioritization.


What you will do:

  • Accountable for concept development, including establishing project objectives, validating business justification, and defining potential options.
  • Lead project feasibility analyses, encompassing options evaluation, cost estimating, preliminary scheduling, and economic analysis.
  • Drive project prioritization and recommend changes to the capital plan, ensuring alignment with business priorities and identifying continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct timely engineering and technical studies to assess proposed projects, evaluating risks and potential impacts to operations.
  • Participate in or lead Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs), What-If analyses, Management of Change (MOC) reviews, and other PSM-related safety assessments.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive design input and review for projects, ensuring effective coordination with area and site personnel.
  • Research and apply emerging industry technologies, best practices, and lessons learned from Nutrien and peer facilities.
  • Serve as project engineer for assigned projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to ensure design quality and deliverables.
  • Support development and stewardship of the site’s long-range capital plan, ensuring alignment with Nutrien’s corporate strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with central engineering and technical services teams to strengthen project definition and execution readiness.
  • Work collaboratively with the site project engineering team to ensure seamless transition from concept to execution.
  • Perform special studies, duties, and projects as assigned.



What you will bring:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in the chemical process industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in economic assessments, financial modeling, and project feasibility analysis.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation or PMP certification considered an asset.
  • Experience in ammonia or nitrogen-based fertilizer operations is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with Aspen HYSYS and other process modeling software.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with engineering software tools.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with both company and contract personnel.
  • Effective collaborator with the ability to facilitate cross-functional teamwork and manage conflict constructively.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs.
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, integrity, and operational excellence.
  • Reliable and consistent performance under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with adherence to established safety policies and procedures.

This role is on-site at one of the major manufacturing facilities for a large chemical manufacturing company that is a pioneer in the agricultural industry. The Sr. Procurement Specialist will be responsible for providing dedicated procurement, program and stakeholder support for the Blue Point project. Supports the project based on advanced project procurement knowledge and industry best practices. Conducts day-to-day procurement execution activities in direct alignment with the company-wide function and with the project execution schedule set by Project Management leadership.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, or related field
  • 6+ years of experience in procurement, supply chain, or engineering
  • Experience with large industrial construction projects and/or operating plants, preferably in oil and gas or chemical industries.
  • Strong technical knowledge of good procurement and industry practices including contract terms negotiation, supplier management, supplier qualification, sourcing bidding and contracting, supplier performance management and risk management.
  • Familiarity with SAP, Ariba, and procurement systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Tableau and Power BI
