Position Overview
The R&D (Packaging Machine Design) Engineer will play an important role in designing, improving, and developing packaging machinery used in automated production environments.
This position combines hands-on mechanical design with creative engineering problem solving. The engineer will work closely with the product development and engineering teams to support multiple machine development initiatives, including improvements to existing platforms and development of new automation solutions.
The ideal candidate has experience designing packaging machinery or special-purpose automation equipment and enjoys solving complex mechanical challenges.
This position is based in the Winder, Georgia area and offers a hybrid work arrangement. The expectation is for the candidate to be onsite two to three days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Packaging Machinery Design
- Design and develop mechanical systems for packaging equipment including filling, capping, container handling, and automation modules.
- Create detailed machine assemblies and component designs using SolidWorks.
- Develop modular machine concepts that support flexible product formats and efficient production changeovers.
R&D and Product Development
- Contribute to the development of new packaging equipment concepts and machine platforms.
- Identify creative engineering solutions to improve machine functionality, reliability, and performance.
- Evaluate opportunities to integrate existing technologies or components that accelerate development timelines.
Machine Optimization
- Improve existing equipment designs to enhance performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Support engineering teams in identifying improvements that reduce complexity and development time.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Support machine builds, troubleshooting, and design refinement during development.
Engineering Documentation
- Create detailed drawings, assemblies, and design documentation.
- Maintain accurate BOMs and engineering records.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
Experience
- Approximately 3–8 years of experience in mechanical design for packaging machinery, industrial automation, or special-purpose equipment.
- Experience designing complex mechanical assemblies and motion systems.
Technical Skills
- Strong SolidWorks proficiency (large assemblies, configurations, detailed drawings).
- Experience with machine design involving mechanical motion systems and automation.
- Familiarity with packaging equipment such as:
- Filling systems
- Capping machines
- Container handling
- Rotary machinery
- Exposure to simulation or CFD tools is beneficial but not required.
Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Finds problems, plans, and implements improvements for existing product and manufacturing process issues.
- Develop and maintain document quality system for new and existing programs (PFMEA, control plan, process flow, work instructions, and inspection documents).
- Performs research, development, evaluation, installation, operation and maintenance of manufacturing systems, processes, and equipment to meet requirements.
- Coordinates the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members, and evaluating results.
- Gives input to product design based on design for manufacture/design for assembly philosophy.
- Performs cost-benefit analysis for product and/or manufacturing process cost reduction, quality improvement, and improved efficiency.
- Leads or participates in Kaizen activities to ensure continuous improvement in manufacturing processes, products, components, raw materials, and equipment.
- Prepares and maintains detailed layouts of building floor space, equipment, and tooling.
- Performs routine activities accurately and promptly per instructions and procedures.
- Train Production and Maintenance Associates to improve technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills on the production shop floor.
- Performs other work as assigned by Management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field with at least 5 years of engineering experience. Experience in automotive manufacturing industry is preferred.
- Must be able to read, interpret, and create blueprints and technical documents.
- Must be proficient with 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, and 2D CAD software, preferably AutoCAD.
- Required to have the PLC knowledge such as Omron, Keyence brand
- Excellent troubleshooting skills. Exhibits ingenuity/creativity regarding problem solving and countermeasure implementation.
- Experience calculating and analyzing OEE, scrap, and manufacturing capacity.
- Experience with capital equipment projects and new product launches while meeting APQP and ISO 9001 and/or TS 16949 standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Required to sit or stand and move about the facility. Occasional lifting of items not to exceed 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Combination of office and plant environment. May be required to use safety glasses and wear steel toe shoes while performing specific tasks or while in specific manufacturing areas.
