This unit allows nurses the opportunity to gain experience caring for a wide variety of patients while also specializing in free flap reconstruction, surgical airways, and extremity replantation. Nurses use their assessment skills to care for post-surgical patients and are heavily involved in patient teaching. Staff on this division cared for the first patient in the country to have restored speech through the use of an artificial larynx.

The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op inpatient care to those patients undergoing surgical procedures in the areas of ENT and Plastic surgery. Inpatient care in this department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing division. The department's surgical observation unit provides more intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic patients whose condition requires treatment at this level.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center, an acute care hospital in St. Louis County, offers a full continuum of medical and surgical services, including heart care, cancer, women and infants, breast health, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, stroke, therapy, wound and pain management services. The Cardiac Cath Lab, a division of the Cardiovascular Procedure Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, is on the leading edge of technology. The Staff Nurse (RN) is an integral part of the patient care team using critical thinking skills, clinical expertise and critical care skills to continually assess the patients' hemodynamic, neurologic and respiratory response to the varied procedures performed in the lab.
